They got rid of the Specialist positions (RIP) about 4 years ago.

Welcome to The Break Room.

Levels kind of determined your paygrade. Thats whole different ball game now.

Not true - we still had pay grades back then. Pay was still decided by pay grade not level.

I was around when we actually used the term "level" 1,2,3..... it literally was a system that established authority in the store. If you were a level 2 (specialist) you were "over" any level one... and technically they had the follow your instructions just like if you were a TL. Likewise, a level 3 was a TL, and anyone below that level had to follow their instructions.

The stores took the levels seriously.... back then, if a level 2, for example, told a level 1 to do something and they were insubordinate, it would result in a write up. Level 2's were even allowed to do write ups sometimes. It was common practice for level 2's (if there was not a level 3) to make the zone list, run the zone, be the goto person if someone needed a supervisor, etc.

Also back then, level 2 & 3 were treated extremely well. They were granted a lot of decision making power in the store in general, and they were widely respected by pretty much everyone. Why? Back then if you were a level 2 or 3 you had to know damn never everything in the store. (not like today when you can be totally inept) Level 2's and 3's almost always had been with the company almost 10 years or more. Back then, it was pretty much unheard of for a level 2 or 3 to have been with the company for less than several years.

Then Target decided to become politically correct and changed all the terminology to "team" and "leader" etc so that it didn't sound so authoritarian.

I wouldn't know about that. I originally started in 99 and picked up level 2 after less than 6 months. Granted, I had a few years of grocery store experience before that and the ETL staff had almost 0 knowledge of grocery so anybody who knew what they were doing moved up quick.
