Hey, so over the weekend, I encountered an unusual transaction I had never encountered before.

Two women came to me at Guest Service with their receipts, wanting to use some "missed coupons" they had forgot to use. The main one being the $10 off bath and bedding purchases, as well as a few coupons for razors, tampons, etc. I carefully inspected the coupons and the items they bought, ready to find a reason to deny the coupons. Unfortunately, they were all for valid use. And the receipts were valid as well. So I went ahead an honored their missed coupons, which gave both of them about $30 back each.

Then, they bring out a 3rd receipt, wanting to do it again. At this point, I know for sure they're pulling a scam. Essentially what the issue seems to be, is that our registers will always accept missed coupons, regardless if that receipt has already been processed before to accept a missed coupon. Meaning, they can have multiple coupons, for only one item, and go from store to store getting reimbursed for them at Guest Service. That's my theory at least, and here is why.

First of all, their receipts were from stores that were about 30-40 miles away. Whenever we get return fraud with a receipt, it usually is from a city very far away.

Secondly, staple marks. Their receipts had marks at the top, where a receipt had previously been stapled to them. It was obvious that these staples where carefully removed as the paper wasn't ripped. The staple had to have been removed by being pried open.

And thirdly, their demeanor. They had typical scammer behavior. Overly friendly. Trying to talk to me about random stuff to distract me, being aloof, and trying to act like they're in a hurry. Also, just coming in very late at night.

So, when it came to their third receipt, I told them I could only do the two I already did, and they would have to take it back to the store they purchased their items from. They only questioned me a little bit and then left. So, have any of you had guests try to pull this with you? What is your policy when it comes to missed coupons? I think for the future, if I find it to be suspicious like this (copious amounts of coupons, far away stores, etc) I'll tell them they'll have to go back to their original store.

We highlight what we used a coupon on now because of this.

That's a pretty good idea. I'll probably do that as well. Saturdays are the worst for me. I notice most of my fraudulent activity happens about a half hour to closing on Saturday nights.

Yep, had one of those the other day. I saw the staple holes and told the gentleman he would need to go back to the original store to get the coupons taken off. I know I was "supposed to" just take the coupons, but I just didn't care.

Yeah, usually when I find the opportunity to, I've told guests they need to go back to their original store of purchase. Right after these two girls left, the guy behind them wanted to return 3 identical electronic toothbrushes, claiming they were gifts. I told him he'd have to go to the original store. He didn't even argue. See, Saturday nights...are just full of this crap.

Friday & sunday nights are liked that too, at my store.

Those links are related to your event.

I really don't get it. I've had people do what he's talking about...going to the sales floor and grabbing items and returning them. But I'm talking about the use of missed coupons...
