I am currently a Backroom Dayside team member. We are going through a PFresh Remodel real soon. All of our instocks team members are going overnight. My TL, ETL-HR both want me to do instocks. Would this be considered a good thing? Is going from Backroom Dayside to Instocks team really a promotion?
 
usually the best workers are the ones who the TL's want to get crossed trained in other areas and do other jobs... so in that sense... you can kind of think of it as a promotion... a real promotion would be pay raise though 😀

i would think of it as a good thing...

It can be a real drag though. But go for it!
 
InStocks is a great place to show off and prepare for TL. (Speaking from experience) 🙂
 
Have done in stocks for over a year, one of the best jobs I have done at Spot over 16 years. You will learn so much about how processes connect from all areas. You impact your store on so many levels and they are visible. As long as your good with partnering with many different workcenters and TL's and ETL's it will pay off big time in the future.

Even though Instocks may be a lower paygrade than backroom, if you are looking to stay with Target it is a great workcenter! You will learn a ton since Instocks has its hands in so many different areas and processes and as you get more comfortable you will be able to speak to more and more things going on in the store! I knew what Plano was doing, where Pricing had its largest markdowns, how the trucks went the night before, if backroom was keeping up with pulls, if the salesfloor was behind on salesplans, what transitions were coming up and where the most flexing needed done etc... Basically you HAD to pay attention to all these areas to do a good job! Its also a great workcenter because there are so many things you can "captain" for the process since most TLs are fine with a TM owning those things! Whether it was raincheck effectiveness, outs with locs, the drastic count report (partner with AP), the PTM process for a certain area... There are tons of things you can own and then speak to later in interviews!

I am a firm believer that you don't HAVE to be in any certain workcenter to show them you can be a TL... I have seen MMB Specialists, HRTMs, GSAs, and SLBTMs promote to TL easily too because of their ownership of an area! I just think ISTM is one of the few positions that allows you to showcase "collaborates" as a strength because of your ability to help out in so many areas!
 
Here's a little about me at Target. I've been with Target for 4 years. All I've done was Backroom. I never had a bad review. Am a top performer constantly. Why would my TL and ETL-HR want me to accept a demotion to Instocks? I get 36 hours ave in backroom, our instocks team gets 30 hours max. I talked to my ETL-HR today, and she said she wanted to see if "I'm good at paying attention to detail"
 
at my store when i was transfered from the floor to instocks it was a raise? weird right?

but its a great work center. steady hours and hey being crosstrained cant hurt right? you just have to move fast and more importantly accurately.

I am on the IS team at our store. I have had many other positions in the more than 10 years I've been Spotified, but IS is by far the most interesting, varied, knowledge-based position that I have had. You have to truly understand how all store processes work and be able to integrate them. Communication is key. Along with how physical it is(something that I like - only surpassed by flow team member), it is the best job in the store, IMO. However, the OP asked if it was a promotion from backroom. It is not. It is a lower paygrade. That is NOT a promotion. Would having this position prepare you for a promotion? Absolutely. However, once you become good at instocks, your chance to be promoted is pretty slim - you'll be one of those "let's keep them where they are because they're good" tms.
 
The thing is at my store, our "Instocks Team" has 3 team members who are at a "needs attention", so what does our store do? Give them an extra dollar more by moving them to overnight remodel for 3 months. Our ETL-LOG just got fired a week ago. I maybe see why they want me to go to instocks to help fix the problems, however I am going to be losing money and hours if I accept this. I am currently in college, with a year left for my bachelors, I need every penny earned at Spot to pay for my books and tuition and to live in general. I kinda feel insulted by this offer but they are trying to spin it off as a "promotion" when in fact I would be losing my cushy dayside hours (36) and extra logistics pay.
 
Explain that you would be happy to learn the job but can't afford to loose any money.
9 times out of 10 they will understand that much.
Not sure about the cushy hours part.
 
Actually the hours is cushy for me because I'm the only Backroom Daysider. I work 5 days a week. The other two days they get a flow team member to work dayside. I just don't understand why they would want to demote me and spin it off as a promotion. I have no performance issues or reliability issues.
 
Speak to your leadership about your concerns regarding hours and that you need to keep your pay (which shouldn't be a problem). Then you should take it and own it. The majority of TMs that took other positions for our remodel got promoted after.

Are they moving two other TMs to instocks? Or are they hiring temps and want you to lead the team?

Regarding the Instock TMs going overnight, they are only getting differential because it is overnight, if they go back to days they will lose that.
 
My leadership is being vague about it. I tried to get some more insight the other day but my ETL-HR said " We are in the process of getting it finalized" I asked her to expand on it but she said "I can't disclose any more information yet"
I know that we are hiring 30 temps to help with our remodel and that our "needs attention instocks team" will only work remodel and not be retained for instocks once remodel is finished due to performance issues. This was the main reason our ETL-LOG got fired and our pricing team leader has been yellow 3 years in a row now.
 
they probably want a strong performer for the IS team. you can always try to negotiate to keep your current pay. they can be lenient about it if they want to. it should be a store to store issue.
 
I really don't think you should be offended. It's not a demotion, it's just considered a less stressful position by paygrade because it is not as physically intensive. However, at my store they are really lax about changing your pay when you change paygrades (unless you're going up). I would just talk to your HR and tell them that you'd love to contribute to InStocks but you would need to keep your current wage and hours. If they can't work around that then stay as a Backroom TM. Additionally, at my store it would mean a whole lot to want someone on InStocks...only our best TMs are suggested for that team.
