Archived Orientation soon...bringing a blank check?

I got a call back from my target store a few days ago saying to bring a blank check. Honestly this is my first job and I don't have a bank account so I'm kinda lost. I know it's to set up direct deposit or something? How to I go about getting a blank check, just by setting up a bank account? I'm nervous that they'll ask me questions that I have no idea how to answer.

You don't need a blank check if you don't want to sign up for direct deposit. Just tell them you don't want to do that at this time.

Yeah, you don't need to have a checking account to get paid. And even when I set up direct deposit in my first week I still got a paper check. But seriously I'd look into setting up some kind of account with a bank or credit union soon as you can.

Saw the title and thought this was going to be a question about signing up for the debit REDcard at orientation. Wouldn't surprise me if they started installing registers in the TSC for the sole purpose of opening up REDcards for new employees.

That's exactly what I thought of when I read the title. "Okay now it's time for all of you to apply for your Debit Cards!"

Go to a credit union & open an acct.
Unlike banks, many of their services are free.
If you DO decide to set up direct deposit, they can print you some temp checks on the spot (1st 4 are usually free).
If you don't, at least you've got a safe place to sock your $$.

Annoyed? Nope, because you can sign up for DD any time you're ready - just have that routing info ready, tho.
As Flabbergasted said, they might also try to pressure you into signing up for the Target Debit card.
Not having a checking acct is a good excuse way to deflect that attempt.

Okay thank you! I think I'm just worrying little too much. Do you recommend signing up for DD though?

It's a good idea to open a checking account at a bank so that you can at least cash your paychecks. You will need one eventually anyways... Walk into any bank and they will be thrilled to help you open an account. Just bring your drivers license or other government issued picture ID and make sure you know your SSN.

Once you have a checking account, it's not necessary to sign up for direct deposit, although it does have the benefits of the money going directly into your account on pay day without you having to do a damn thing. I would just do a regular paycheck for now until you get annoyed with it.

Thanks for the advice! I'm planning to go open an account tomorrow since orientation is in a few days. You're right, direct deposit seems pretty convenient so I will try to sign up at orientation.

If you can I'd go to a Credit Union to open an account.
They're much better than banks.

Target has its own credit union (it's run by another company, Baxter Credit Union). In my experience, it's pretty good.

Credit unions are member-supported; some are member-run so many services are free.
Mine has enough free ATMs around town so I don't get dinged for an emergency withdrawal.
Also have free checking, free online services, no-annual-fee Visa (at 9.5% APR) just to name a few.

They're usually pretty good about keeping things fee-free.

I just looked around for a national bank that has the type of services I need and doesn't charge for them.

I travel out of state several times a year so it is helpful to know that wherever I go, I can visit a branch or get cash from an ATM without a fee.

Why is everyone assuming it isn't about signing up for a red card at orientation? Our store just hired a new tm. And at break, she said ... Oh yeah, they had me apply for a red card at orientation.

So, yes, it may for dd too. But in my opinion, it will be to pressure you to get that red card.
