My STL and I were working together today and she had been asking me about what TL positions I'd want to move into (so I'm assuming she has a scheme in mind)... GSTL, softlines , APL, flow, and SFT(?) we're brought up during the conversation. I guess my question here is; is SFT considered a "team lead" position?
I never thought of it as one before, it seems like it'd be more along the lines of some kind of specialist position in disguise, rather than a team lead job.. Thoughts?

Note: I'll most likely not become an SFT, I just want to "broaden my horizons" a little bit as far as target knowledge goes.

SFT is considered a team lead job although they dont have a team to lead. I think they are considered this since of their impact in the facilities of the store. Not quite sure but they might be same paygrade N13 as team leads. In my store the SFT follows up with the cart attendants on the spill stations, supplies, etc. I've heard rumors that corporate is trying to make SFT be the team leads of cart attendants in all stores.

I always thought if I was a little more handy I would have liked to become a SFT.
They are technically a TL but they have a team of one, themselves (they still have to fill out a lot of the same damn paperwork though).
Your hours are consistent, the STLs really can only make suggestions as to what you are supposed to do and as long as you take care of all your work orders you will go far.

I know I'm simplifying what is actually a very complex job but you get my drift.

SFTs are considered Sr. Team Leads even though they don't have a team to lead. They start off at paygrade 17. They not only fix problems around the store but lead brand and cleanliness through influencing others and partnerships with other ETLs and TLs.

The SFT position is classified as a TL because they have to lead not only the cleaning crew, but also manage with a variety of service vendors.

SFT's in Canada have all weekends plus holidays off and most work Monday thru Friday, 6.00am to 2.30pm. Although they are assigned to a store, they report directly to the PDBP. Career advances after an SFT role include PDBP, OSR, PDFL, or other property development/real estate/construction roles in Target.

I really wish you guys explained the acronyms every so often for those who don't know. SFT?

I don't know about the best job, but they seem to have the most freedom and the best schedule of anyone at the store level.

You're right about the freedom and the schedule, but they have a lot to keep their eye on, and a lot of vendors to ride herd on. And in the North they spend a lot of time out in the cold making sure the parking lot and sidewalks are safe. In heavy snow years they have to measure snowload and roof deflection by walking around on the roof. I know because two years ago we had so much snow that we could see from inside the store how much the suspended ceiling was sagging.

SFT stands for Store Facilities Technician. We work 6-2:45 Monday thru Friday with paid Holidays off. We now report directly to our ETL-LOG were before it was the DFM (now FMBP). We are in charge of Venders (cleaning crew, electricians, plumbers, techs, etc.) making sure that they complete the job correctly. SFTs have a workload to accomplish each week but it up to them when they want to complete it by within the week and some weeks are heavier than others. SFTs daily workload varies depending on what PMs and field projects need to be done for that week and anything that breaks and needs repair. SFTs not only need to have technical skills but also leadership skills as well as we use leadership to partner with everyone in the store to make sure the store looks brand. Over the past few years the SFT position has been becoming more and more of a leadership position than just a kind of store handyman.

Just to clarify something - the SFTs are not "in charge" of the vendors, cleaning crew, etc. We are the store contact person for all of the outside vendors, including the cleaning crew. We grade or rate the job that the cleaning crew is supposed to be doing on a daily basis, letting them know if an area is falling short of being brand. If talking to the in-house crew does not resolve the issues, we contact their supervisors. For the refrigeration, HVAC, electrical etc. vendors, when they come in or call, we let them know what the problem and symptoms are to the problem, and what steps we have done to try to fix the equipment.
We are not supervisors over any of these people. They all work for another company that contracts with Target to fix the store assets.

Our SFT is quitting. He doesn't see his job being around forever since he doesn't have that much to do and thinks that the stores will be sharing an SFT before long and doesn't want to take the chance that he'll be out of a job. We'll be losing a great one. Blah.

Sft is store field tech. All spot terms are located in our wiki forum.

I though it was Store Facility Tech?

I thought so, too.
Both of you are correct.

I thought it meant Store Fixer of Things?

I didn't know what it really meant either, so I'm glad I stumbled across this thread!

If you go on target.com/careers and try to apply as an external hire, it lists the job as "store facilities technician"
