they retroactively cut hours today. I wish they would have warned me to bite the pillow first. Management just went around telling various people not to come in on various days the rest of this week. Never have I seen taking away scheduled shifts on the scale that they did it today. They must have yanked one from at least half of the people there, including me. I expect layoffs are soon to follow at this rate. Anybody else get super shafted with retroactive cuts lately?

ETA: Of course we're still hiring too. Figure that one out...

Wow..no but you've got me worried now. Target doesn't lay off, they just cut you to the bone till you can't afford to work there. You can file for partial unemployment but it doesn't cover all lost wages.

We've had that happen before. Recently in fact. There was about two or three weeks where my execs were having to cut anywhere from 10-150 hours off the schedule. That was an awful two weeks for my paycheck and the store. Flow was so backed up that we only had time to unload some days. There was no room to walk around in receiving or the stockroom. Just awful. Yet somehow cutting payroll to where you can't work a truck resulting in lost sales = savings. Short term thinking.

The good news is that the hour cuts should end next week. The cuts are probably crazy right now because you've overspent for the month or sales have been down and your execs waited to cut hours until the last week of the month. It happens. We've let trucks sit for a day so that working it actually falls into the next month. Not a healthy habit to start. Not a healthy habit at all.

Sorry if I am stating the obvious, but this is against Target policy. They can ask you not to come in but cannot tell you not to work your scheduled shift. Of course, there could be future ramifications if you push them on this, but that is what a schedule is for. Otherwise, why have it? It isn't a guide. You couldn't just come and go when YOU please.

They sometimes try at my store sometimes. Some people don't mind at all. I do. This is how I pay me bills. They will ask a lot of people, but they don't ask me. They know I will say, "No. I will work my schedule. Thanks for the offer."

See I didn't really know that. Otherwise I probably would have protested. Some of the others were saying that they thought they couldn't do that, but I didn't see why they couldn't legally. Didn't know what store policy was though.

It might be against policy, but I've been told by my HR tm and ETL-HR that they are allowed to make edits when they need to add or cut shifts. They just have to let you know that there have been edits to the schedule and that you need to check eHR. Asking you not to come in for your scheduled shift is a courtesy in my store. Good luck getting any ETL to clock you in when you're not scheduled and they've been cutting shifts!

Sounds like you are not making sales and they are trying to make the month with payroll. Sucks big time. This is why it is so important that during the month when you are dead you ask people if they want to leave early. There are always people who would love to cut out an hour or two early. If the LODs would be proactive on slow days you would't have this mass slashing at the end of every month.

Target does layoff, just not hourly store employees.

Sales were catastrophic over memorial day weekend. Plato could have written an epic about how bad they were. I saw it coming, but management was too optimistic.

Well, nothing like having a policy and then not following it. I am not saying they can't (I won't use the word "allowed") but if the people they are asking say yes, then it seems that it is allowable.

And like I stated, it depends on how you want it to be in the future. If you are a hard case about it, it will probably be rough road ahead. If you are known as someone who doesn't cave in though, they may not even ask. I think that is my case.

You probably just missed sales enough to lose flex hours and its the end of the month so it's do or die for monthly payroll. If it was hours being "cut" now it wouldn't hit the store until 2 weeks out since hours are forecasted that far in advance

It depends on how I feel. They know I'll volunteer to go home early an hour or two every once in a while if we need to shave some hours. But for the most part they don't usually ask me to leave because I've usually been the only person trained to do my job (entertainment specialist then PA).

Please, master of business, tell us more!

Personal attacks out of nowhere! I know a little bit about economics and may or may not keep up with economic data, but I'm not about to list my qualifications or start listing off why I saw this coming. I believe Keynesian economics is an utter failure and completely illogical, and that's all I've really got to say for you to either think I'm an idiot, or understand why I saw this downturn coming, depending on whether or not you are a proponent of Keynesian economics.

On a side note if you think the average ETL is economically savvy, that's just a joke. Half of them are fresh out of college with no experience and a degree in liberal arts.

So will folks be using up their vacation/sick/personal hours to make up the loss?
Or have you already burned all of those?
I was telling a teacher friend about using vacation hours to make up for weeks when my hours were cut and they were horrified.
But that only works if you are full time and can earn the hours.

My 2nd job makes up for the difference.

I also have a second job. I will use vacation hours and, if hours are cut enough, file for unemployment. I'm willing to work and the bills must be paid. It sucks that those vacation hours never get used for an actual vacation. So much for that work/life balance....but I'm sure there will be some amazing vibe that comes out of all of it.

Tell me about it....

Sure was nice when all of Spot's whims and wants were easily dismissed by me back when it was my secondary gig rather than my primary...

So glad I'm guaranteed hours in my workcenter. I was guilty of using vacation hours to pad my paychecks when hours dropped before my promotion was official. Luckily my store doesn't seem to be hit as hard as some here.

I picked up a second job a few months ago to make up for Target's whims....and used my vacation hours. The problem is Target has been upping my hours to the point that I am working 50-90 hours at a stretch...three of my 10 days in a row this time around are 15 hours back to back to back to back for both jobs. I am quickly burning out.

Seeing it here also. This week we're down two people in both SL and HL a night and no morning TMs on the floor (except TLs)...HR says it's the end of the month "oh crap we're over payroll" dash.

With a few brief periods of exception, it's been that way for us since last fall. Yesterday we only had one closer, and I was the only mid. There were no openers. Today I'll probably be the only closer. With as many shifts as they yanked, I've got to wonder if every area will even have open to close coverage at this point. It's bad enough when you're the only person in hardlines and you need to go up for back up, knowing that as long as you're on lane, nothing's getting done.

Usually thats due to a need to reallocate hours to another work center or they expecting a few people to hit overtime.

But as far as I remember, but it may depend on your state, once the schedule has been posted they cannot take hours away from you unless you they ask you to voluntarily not come in for your shift.

And they cannot schedule you for additional shifts without giving you notice.
