Our STL announced at our huddle early this afternoon that in order to stay competitive, target will have its stores stay open until 9pm on christmas eve instead of the usual 7pm...this is getting a little ridiculous...

Heck I remember closing at 5pm and 6pm. Usually around the 5pm, business really drops off because many of churches and communities have Christmas Eve services. So why even stay open.

Yea we just heard the news too. This actually makes more sense than the Black Friday announcement because this will actually drive more sales. Our store stands to make at LEAST an extra 20 thousand.

Did they announce this to the press yet? Can't find any links online....not sure if it's OK to talk to non-Target folks yet without fear of being fired lol.

Usually if they announce it to us its on its way to being released to the press, give it a few hours or so...i'm sure their will be controversy over this one, just as there was with the 12AM black friday opening...

I don't really mind... It's not like were opening 3 hours earlier like black friday and we didn't get much sleep...

Were staying open for 2 extra hours its really not a huge deal.

Being open until 7 last year we had guests in the store until 7:30 and didn't get out until ab 8:45 and that was with I think 7 closers on each side. I cannot imagine how this year will be.

Also - Target is softening the blow for hourly TMs by giving an extra dollar per hour for anyone working past 5pm.

Sucks for us ETLs though.

lol, I get why theyre doing it. But serious, what happened to being with your family? Im sure nobody above store level will be in the office at 7pm Christmas eve. I call bull************, again.

The only person who seemed pissed about it at my store was the ETL HR. He always closes that night with our STL. Other than that, no one batted an eye.

volunteers seem the best way to go with this, lots of tms will not mind working, last year we did not get out till 10 anyway because our stl wants the store to be perfect before anybody leaves, always goes down well, from a business point of view it probably makes more sense then black friday when we only had a fixed amount of hot product to sell anyway and we sold out of it all in short time,we will most likely generate more sales on Christmas eve.
Oh and about that extra dollar it should be put in the same place as the 5c pay increase most tms will get next year.

Again this fits into the whole "well being" how? If you have a decent STL that makes sure the team is out at 9:05 great, but there are those STLS that will have the team stay until 10 or 11. It would be great also if they asked for volunteers first, but our store won't. There will be a petition I am sure.....

We are closing at 8pm at walmart this year. But I dont see what the big deal is. Only a select few will even close and its not like Black Friday where everyone has to work. Just quit ***************ing about working. You should be thankfull you have a job

Attention team members: Christmas has been cancelled this year due to a lack of hustle! Deal with it!!!!

Don't really care that much about the holiday, I'm Jewish.
I'd be pissed if they made me work on Yom Kipper so what do I know.
But I have to take that as a personal day.

Really tired of hearing that same BS. Yeh, I have a job & husband doesn't. Is a crappy economy reason to take away time from my family on both Thanksgiving AND Christmas? While all the moneyed folk spend their time treating us like lower lifeforms?
And before you go off about working in retail, it's the ONLY place right now that's hiring & where I can get benefits for my family. It's easy to be sanctimonious when you don't have to worry about kids or spouse.

I closed on a Christmas Eve, but the story was the same for every year before I got there and after I left. The store hired off-duty cops from the City to come in 20 minutes before closing to herd the crowd up front and out the door; even then it was 20 minutes after closing before we managed to push the last guest out the door. They always totally destroyed the store. At that time we closed at 6pm and we kept the closing crew until 9. Even then, the store was still totally destroyed but we couldn't see keeping anybody later than that. Me and my partner ETL just decided to take the heat from our STL and let the team go anyway.

True, but whats stoping you from doing something else? Whats stoping you from lets say getting as degree and leaving Target for better pastures?

College is expensive, not everyone can afford it. I work two jobs just so I can afford part-time tuition at my local community college. Plus, a lot of college graduates are having trouble getting jobs in their fields because the companies just aren't hiring. Retail is one of few options many of us have, even with a degree.

I honestly don't care all that much about staying open until 9. I don't think very many people in our store care either. Our STL told us in huddle that he will have a full staff that day and night and HE WILL be escorting us out no later than 9:15.

Our STL left a note about it by the timeclock (with a scribble stating that it was corporate's decision, not hers!), and our ETL-GE announced it at the opening huddle, but she said that they would ask for volunteers before they make the schedule.

Life. I have a degree. I have done "something else". Suffice it to say that "something else" is why I work in retail. I wish I could have your simplistic view of why people work retail, assuming that they are unmotivated, uneducated slackers that have no other options. I probably did when I was younger.
