Hello beautiful people!
I'm hoping to get some experiences and advices from all of you regarding my situation at Target.
I work in FA and I recently applied for gsa. I was pretty much asked to apply for this position and aaparently a lot of people have faith in me. We're currently just waiting for the end of the interview process.
In the meantime. ...today I heard that our HR put her 2weeks notice in. One of my ETLs asked me if I had experience in clerical and if I would be interested in the position. I let him know that I had some experience back in my home country and that I would love to apply the position, I told him that if he knows me even slightly, he knows that I want to geow and develop, doesn't really matter where. And when it came down to the job itself I know I am wasy too stubborn to not learn and I strive for perfection and I am a fast and avid learner.
He also said that due to my very neutral relationships around the store, I would be a good candidate for the position.
Anyways, I am asking for your thoughts. What kind of skills would you think are necessary to move to HR? Would it be worth to try master excel or quickbooks before the position opens or is it not necessary? What kind of position is it (TL, specialistic, other)? Which one is more stressful, higher pay grade? Anyone has had HR experience?
I would love to have a shot at hr because even outside of Target it would be a nice addition to the resume but I really want to make sure that I am fit for the position so that I won't lose my job in case I got it!
Anyone cares to share their wisdom?

I loved working in HR. Priority one is trust and confidentiality. I don't know if your store has a TL position or not. You would have to ask. If it is a TM position, it should be a paygrade 7, which is the same as a gsa.

I used Word and Excel every so often, but most of my work was done via Target's intranet system. A big skill you need to have is multi-tasking. You may be on the phone and doing several tasks at the same time. It can get hectic. Also, it really helps to be well organized.

You don't need to know any special programs like that for HR. Most of the work is in mytime, which in theory you would receive some training in. I say go for HR. It is way less stress, for at least the same amount of money as GSA. My guess is that this is an HRTM position.

My guess is that this is an HRTM position.

Well I do believe that it's a TM position although my ETL said it is still a promotion so I am not really sure about that.
I really think it's a great opportunity because I would like to get out of retail eventually and this is a good step in that direction.
I am excited to apply for it and I really really want it!!

Yeh, my store used to approach TMs with the "You'd be really good as a GSA because you're responsible, have leadership qualities, bla bla bla, only to find out they burn thru them like paper on a bonfire.
Many GSAs at my store either step down or quit to escape.
GSA is merely a junior supervisor position with no authority, filled with stress, where you're hounded about metrics & redcards.
You're expected to do the job of a GSTL but paid only a pittance more.
Go for the HR spot.
You'll get experience that you can take to many other companies.

I agree, go for the HR slot.
Whatever stress you get in that position and there will be plenty will not compare to the amount you would get as a GSA.
The HR TM is generally respected and folks often go to them before they go to the ETL.

Thanks you all! The position should open in a couple of weeks and this week we're finishing our round of interviews for gsa. I asked my ETL if hypothetically I were to get the GSA position if it would be possible for me to switch shortly after to HR. He said there would be another interview process but I would definitely be able to. Any of you can confirm or deny? Is there a waiting period in between applications/promotions?

I'd be careful with that promise...it wouldnt make sense for target to train someone to be basically a GSTL; for them to switch a few weeks later to be a HRTM

Agreed. I would choose one or the other and inform your ETL of your decision ASAP. Usually, you have to be in one position for quite a while before moving to another. Tread carefully.

I know right? That's what sounded weird to me. Especially if you consider that after the interviewing-hiring-training , they would have to do a switch and then open the gsa position again and start everything all over.
I'm pretty sure they are just testing their ground to decide what to do. I will go talk to my ETLHR and try to get more details about my opportunities

Yep, your ETL was lying (or dumb...you know best). After switching positions, you really can't train/switch positions until you've mastered the one you are in...and by that time the HR one will be long filled.

Echoing what others are saying. I probably wouldn't have quit if I was given the opportunity to take the open HRTM position. Instead, they hired externally for that and I got GSA. No, no, no.

Take a lesson from Ms. Winehouse:

"They try to make me go to the front lanes. I say no, no, no!"

Thank you very much guys! Tomorrow I have my 2nd interview for gsa and then a 3rd one will be scheduled. The position will not be open for another couple of weeks so as of now I will interview tomorrow and then go talk to my ETL HR and ask her. My fear is that somehow I will lose both and I honestly need to get out of FA!!

I mean if there was a FATL position for my store I would go for it. I like FA itself but I don't necessarily like the "no way out" feeling.
When it comes to HR, our HR works 9am-5pm 5 days a week (rarely you will see her on Sat. or "late" until 7pm). I've been thinking to look for an office job because I would love a family one day but feels like retail life and kids don't mix at all.
I would love to get the position I just hope that pulling away from GSA won't get me empty handed but I guess there's no gain without any risks.

No mean to be offensive, but if you have the opportunity to take HR but go for GSA, you are mad dumb for real. I got way more than .50 over minimum... But I was external hire. If you go there you will hate it more than fa and be stuck there. Listen to the half dozen warnings you've got.

Cmat you're not offensive at all I am just debating what would my next step be (besides talking to my HR ETL) because the position in not open YET. The person JUST gave her 2 weeks notice and the GSA position should be assigned withing the next 10 days. Now that being said, I am just asking everyone to share their experiences so that I can actually gauge whether or not I will have a shot at it or lose both chances for a promotion.
Of course I want HR but I know for a fact that I have more shots at GSA that is why I am so indecisive.
Thanks for the feedback though. Now I really now that HR is what I want!
