I just tried again this morning right after I typed in the above (12:11pm) and it's still telling me to wait due to the high demand.

I tried to sign up for protection, a completely fruitless effort on my end. First the website, protectmyid.com....looks like a typical scam site, it's great Target couldn't send us a functioning hyperlink so I was sure I was actually getting to the right website. Whatever. After going through the whole process I get to the end and it sends back an error. Awesome, so I do it all again and this time it says

Unfortunately, Experian did not return any data when we submitted the information you entered on your order form. This may be because they have no credit record for you (for example, if you have had no previous credit relationships or have recently moved to the United States from abroad) or the information you supplied did not match the information in their database.

Well that's just great. I guess someone with no credit history shouldn't worry then? :hmm:

I still can't get thru. I tried late last night when I got home around 11:30 and then again around 6:30 this morning. It just says, "Process taking longer than usual due to high demand. Thank you for your patience.". Good thing we have until April, it might just take me that long to get thru.

Got a email, about a hour ago, from Spot...

Dear Target Guest,

As you may have heard or read, Target learned in mid-December that criminals forced their way into our systems and took guest information, including debit and credit card data. Late last week, as part of our ongoing investigation, we learned that additional information, including name, mailing address, phone number or email address, was also taken. I am writing to make you aware that your name, mailing address, phone number or email address may have been taken during the intrusion.

I am truly sorry this incident occurred and sincerely regret any inconvenience it may cause you. Because we value you as a guest and your trust is important to us, Target is offering one year of free credit monitoring to all Target guests who shopped in U.S. stores, through Experian’s® ProtectMyID® product which includes identity theft insurance where available. To receive your unique activation code for this service, please go to creditmonitoring.target.com and register before April 23, 2014. Activation codes must be redeemed by April 30, 2014.

In addition, to guard against possible scams, always be cautious about sharing personal information, such as Social Security numbers, passwords, user IDs and financial account information. Here are some tips that will help protect you:

Never share information with anyone over the phone, email or text, even if they claim to be someone you know or do business with. Instead, ask for a call-back number.
Delete texts immediately from numbers or names you don’t recognize.
Be wary of emails that ask for money or send you to suspicious websites. Don’t click links within emails you don’t recognize.

Target’s email communication regarding this incident will never ask you to provide personal or sensitive information.

Thank you for your patience and loyalty to Target. You can find additional information and FAQs about this incident at our Target.com/databreach website. If you have further questions, you may call us at 866-852-8680.

Wow, they finally did something right and in a clear and concise manner. GTC to Gregg?

I'll bet someone else wrote it for him (probably under threat of termination - like the kid at school who would get beaten up if he didn't do the bully's homework).

Whoa whoa whoa! Let's not go overboard here. Could be just an aberration.
We need some consistent performance before going to such a level of praise.

They probably went to an firm that specializes in handling corporate disasters like this one.
I'm sure they also cost a small fortune for the consultation.

Why am I not surprised?
It would be stupid to stop with Target.
Getting as many places as possible before there is a patch for the malware only makes sense.

I was able to sign up, just right now :)
