some team members were talking about this today. What if a guest were to order 50,000 random items online for store pick up. Since you don't get charged till you pick it up the guest could order something with zero intention of picking it up. The backroom would have to prepare the order wasting time.

it'd just be what's instock, the rest would show up as unpicked. picking one item isn't that big a deal, its searching the random softlines item.

we have tons of items that don't get picked up, all you really did was tie up that product for a couple days.

Except, that you do.

Technically we say you don't, but we put a hold on the funds when you place the order, it's to ensure the payment actually goes through so we don't get screwed by giving them the items and then having the payment not go through afterwards. Thus they can't order something they can't afford, and them ordering tons of shit could potentially even lead to them bouncing checks and such due to unusable funds. There's lots of ways it could backfire on a guest trying to be a smartass.

I was under the impression that you paid for the items as you order them, then got refunded or something if the order got cancelled. Specifically to dissuade this kind of abuse.

Sort of, but not really. Have you ever noticed that gas stations will "charge" your account for $1 after you get gas, then later update the charge to whatever you actually bought? We do the same thing, only we know the exact amount, so we put a hold on the account for the exact amount. Once the order is either picked up or cancelled, we then either charge the card or remove the hold.
