Can you get a pay decrease if you move to an area where pay is less? I'm confident the answer is no, but an ETL tried to tell me that you did.

Oh, I'm certain they can.
Normally they don't but I'm willing to bet that if they wanted to put a fine point on it (and up yours) they could.

This just seems highly unlikely to me. Especially since I know of someone who moved to an area that didn't pay as much as his previous and he didn't get a decrease.

Wait, are you talking about changing work centers or moving to a different store? If you changing work centers (ex. going from an N07 to an N05) you absolutely will lose pay. If you are moving from a state where you get paid more (ex. Mass) to somewhere that pays less (ex. anywhere down South) you would not be docked any pay.

Uh that sounds sweet-- moving down south and still making my Massachusetts wage!
But I will confirm that YES, if you move to a workcenter that pays less, they CAN decrease your pay!! WILL they? Oh who knows. They did for me, but you bet your ass they wanted to.

they won't take it away in an instance where they get rid of the position and force you to move. Lets say, when they got rid of the specialist position. Those people didn't loose the pay they had, they just lost the title. But lets say salesfloor TM moved to produce or backroom, and they don't have hours for you and move you back to salesfloor, Then they will drop it to that paygrade again.

If the cost of living is different when transferring between stores, you can see a difference in wages.

I went from being the shoe specialist to cashiering and they took away a dollar an hour.....going from 40 hours to 28 was quite a drastic change. I lost money as well as hours.

I think that the paygrade decrease probably has more to do with how much the HR dept and the managers making the decision like you.
Since I had decreased hours going from one position to another I'd have thought that they'd let the pay rate stay as it was for me as a specialist.

If you stayed in shoes, you shouldn't have been docked.
But moving you to cashier gave them an out & if spot can use it to shave payroll, they will.

I went from backroom to cashier and didn't lose any pay. I still get merit increases and my paychecks definitely say I'm N03.

It's up to the HR ETL. Technically, your pay grade is supposed to change, but sometimes the HR ETL will forget or intentionally look the other way. I know for a fact my HR ETL has changed it and has purposely not changed it for others.
