In addition to my earlier post, yes it sucks that we are opening at midnight and for many of us that means cutting our holiday short. However, I myself am volunteering myself to come in for the midnight shift. That means coming in at 8 or 9 pm on Thanksgiving (meaning time and a half for those few hours), then coming in before 5 am, adds another shift pay (which is generally $1 extra) per hour, then if you work 12 hours- 16 hours, you will get shift differential/time and a half again. So it adds up when you think about it. Plus Black Friday goes by fast when you think about how fast it goes and all the rushing around everyone will be doing. Again I am not really advocating for this as a positive change in no way, but merely looking at it from a wage earning aspect.

If that is true my store is screwed. Our management can barely handle a busy Saturday afternoon, I can't imagine how they will deal with Black Friday.:D
Here is your chance to start prepping now for bf, if you are a tl or a trainer. By doing little things now, there is payoff long term. For ex: training new tm's by best practice & no PDA's. Use workbench for reference.
Communicate or partner With tl/etl on ideas on ad setup & such. Be proactive!

Have them also train new TMs how to read planogram locations. It goes so faster when you know the item is located at Aisle 23 3-1-3 instead of a 5 minute search.

When I was learning Sales Floor last year that was a HUGE help! IT WORKS! :)

My sanity waltzed out the door last yr & I haven't heard from it since.
It must be having a good time somewhere....

I'm looking forward to seeing how all our etls do. ALL of them are fresh out of college, and I see they are scheduled for the toys department...LOL!

Honestly, I really don't think they will survive.

No kidding on that!
Red, I think I saw your sanity hanging out near the tv's, watching red.

The signing specialist who trained me gave me some good in advice for dealing with ETL's that has served me well.
He said whenever some college kid starts riding you about not doing your job fast enough the solution is simple.
Just step back and ask to be shown how to do it faster and more efficiently because it is very important to you to do the job well.
I've only had to do it once, the result was humorous beyond belief.
Needless to say I didn't get a demonstration and nobody has bothered me since.

It is also the true test of any TMs sanity!!!

Since I was originally hired as seasonal last year, my first non-training week was the week of Thanksgiving. The fact that I not only survived Black Friday but still work there to this day demonstrates my lack of sanity.

This has worked for me with a team leader - was amazingly funny. And she treats me so sweetly now, almost embarrassing!

.... I'm so so sorry if this has been asked/answered.... but I asked one of our ETL's about Pay for those coming in on Thursday ... he said that we are going to be paid time and a half for the whole entire shift, IF we are starting before midnight on Thursday, but he would let us know if anything changes.
TODAY I went into work to grab a couple of things and spoke with someone (not saying who cause of id) and they were now told that NO Holiday Pay or time and a half after midnight.
Now if this is true, I am going to revoke my request to come in before midnight and to be scheduled at 4 a.m.
Has there been any word on this "changing of minds" yet?

...and just when you don't think it could suck any worse....

F*ck that, everyone should get DOUBLE pay *AND* hazard pay for working on Black Friday. No matter what shift you work.

I thought they paid time and a half on Friday regardless of start time? I recall that being mentioned here before anyway.

Friday is not and never has been time and a half, it is just a normal day of the week (state laws may override that etc etc).

Every year in the past you only get time and a half for hours actually spent working on Thanksgiving day. i.e. you come in at 10pm Wednesday night, you start earning time and a half after midnight.

So for the midnight openers, we clock in at 11:30 and get an hours worth of pay for 11:30-midnight?

You will get holiday pay from 11:30 to midnight. The rest of your shift should be regular pay plus a shift difference if your state has that.
