As to the question of "Why should a burger flipper get $15 when a paramedic only makes that much?" here is a paramedic to answer that question.

Wal-Mart’s Raise: Unhappy Workers - http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-08-06/an-unintended-consequence-of-wal-mart-pay-raise-unhappy-workers

Finally the media is starting to notice that veteran employees are getting screwed with these new minimum pay levels that companies are setting.

Yeah it was cute on Wal-marts part to give the base pay raise but do nothing for the people who had been with the company for a while.
The comment that was telling was when she said that they knew this would happen.
I'm curious if they will use this as an excuse not to do the next raise that they promised.
"Well, we did it once and look how it hurt all the other workers."
We will see.

Yup, which means Target will have no inducement to match them again. Argh. Its almost like they want to push out their workers who have been with the company for some time but haven't promoted for one reason or another...

No, I just clicked on their profile after noticing every controversial thread they made had been locked. Their profile isn't available and it says Perma Banned under their avatar.

If everyone makes a livable wage, there's no reason to better yourself with school and/or specialized training. Giving everyone a livable wage even for crappy low end jobs will fail for the same reason socialism does.

Why would someone be a paramedic if they can do a much easier job for the same pay?

Really?

So if you can survive, not starve, make basic rent, keep the lights on, not have to live with four other people, etc, that means you will work at Target for the rest of your life?
Sure, I guess there might be some slackers who would be willing to work jobs like that but you know what, so what?
If someone works 40 hours a week at what point should they not be able to pay their bills?

When I worked at the grocery store as a meat cutter there were cashiers who worked at the store who worked there all their life, who put their kids through school, made house payments, and car payments.
Can you imagine a cashier at Target being able to do that?

People go to school or get specialized training because they want to better themselves.
It's human nature to want to make ourselves better, to advance ourselves.
Parents push their kids to be better then them, or to carry on traditions.
It's not what you're going to get paid that makes people advance themselves.

I don't think it's about making equivalent, but instead lovable wage. My phone autocorrected that from liveable, and for the sake of making me laugh, I'm keeping it.

typo aside...

As is, making ends meet shouldn't be so difficult that school or other further livelihood is entirely unobtainable. Add to the mix the cases in which young adults end up caring for sick parents, are part of an accident, or inherit an unexpected debt and you have individuals who may virtually never have the opportunity in life to get ahead with entry level opportunities.

As far as doing a job easier than another, different people excel at different things. Just because someone can drive around a few pallets at the mill doesn't mean they can handle the berating tempers of the guests at the guest service counter for half the pay.

The reason I am stuck in retail is there is no job out there for me yet without moving across country, something I can't afford to do. It's not because I want to be "lazy" and work an "easy" job. It's not easy. Hell I'm 26 and I come home to with my knees aching, and my mental stability hanging by a thread. Why can people say that retail takes no skills? Does it really take that many more skills to teach a group of kids with worksheets, seeing as throughout high school my teachers read a textbook for 10 minutes and then gave us worksheets to do for the rest of class? No but there's a huge difference because those jobs are appreciated. People in retail are scum according to everyone saying we don't deserve to make a living wage because we didn't go to college. Because it doesnt take skill to tear down whole sections of a store, read a map, place everything 100% correctly then put it all back up in less time than it took the monkey in corporate (getting paid more) to do it, or run some computer program and say it should only take 12 hours. If it took some genius in corporate 12 hours to do a job why can the low life retail workers do it in 10? If they tell stores that 100 clearance tickets an hour, plus labels need done, and you have 15000 tickets and another 400 labels, and you're only scheduled 98 hours.. tell me that doesn't take skill to complete? No matter how hard you work that equals failure, and mental degrading from your superiors (who got a college degree to do what.. sit around all day and open doors and deal with mean guests.. and tell a team what to do?)

It's not that minimum wage should equal what a paramedic gets, it's that minimum wage should be able to support you if you're working 40 hours. A single person should be able to afford a small studio apartment by themselves working full time hours anywhere. A small studio apartment in my town is almost $600. What I make in two weeks? $510. The gas it takes to get to work every two weeks is already $60. I don't even qualify for any food stamps, so food is anywhere from $50-$100 depending on how poorly I eat. The. You have to pay rent, water, hope you have enough money for your electric.. God forbid I be able to enjoy my time at home and pay $50 a month for cable. I couldn't afford to do anything! And what happens when I need clothes to wear? Minimum wage workers should all get foodstamps and clothing allowances if they don't raise it.

We are not comparing other people's wages and saying we should make what they make. That's just greedy. The paramedics should be fighting with us to get a hike in minimum wage, and their wage would go up as well. God knows the money Is out there. They give too much to football players, baseball players, politicians, celebrities. Why should someone be able to buy two mansions off their baseball salary when he just PLAYS for a living? Sure he might get hurt, but one years salary of theirs would cover me for almost my entire life. And i would actually be able to afford cable or Internet or go see a movie with my friend once in a while.

If everyone gets paid $15/hr, high school students and college students will become unemployed, try and justify it however you want, but that's the truth.

All those entry level jobs will be sought after by people who are unemployed & skilled.

In Australia where the minimum wage is $17.59 an hour they have a lower minimum wage (not significant like 3 bucks less) for kids under 18 but anybody working for that wage has to be going to school so they have very limited hours they can work etc.
I would have no problem with an arrangement like that.

Under 18 helps, but it doesn't solve the problem for people 18+ who are unskilled workers. Like a lot of college students who didn't work during HS.

I just don't think we should be rewarding people for being unskilled workers, everyone should aspire to be good at something.

Minimum wage jobs were intended for entry level workers, as a stepping stone for job skills to secure better jobs down the line.

Go to college, trade school, get certified in something... Whatever. I'm not saying everyone has to go to a 4 year college, just learn something and do it. Working at Target shouldn't be a living (as a TM)

Not to mention the wage hikes are going to increase prices and cut jobs... Instead of having employees take your order at Mcdonalds, you will use a touch screen for example. These are the kinds of changes a wage hike to $15/hr would change. Companies who have to pay more into employee compensation will recoup those costs elsewhere (downsizing, merging positions, raising prices)

I know its probably pointless that I'm arguing this on a Target forum considering most people work for Target and get paid near minimum wage. Always vote in your best interests.

EDIT: Also creating a "lower" wage for people under 18 would mean people over 18 would have a harder time finding entry level jobs as well. Since they are "easy" entry-level jobs, employers would want to employ those under 18 for cheaper. So just as much as it fixes the problem, it causes another problem.
