It was deemed too generic and often elicited a generic response from guests. We are now supposed to be more personable when greeting guests.

I can certainly see the point of that.
I always asked, "Are you finding everything you need?"
That way there was more likelihood of getting a positive answer then a negative one when things were fine and when they needed help the question led to what it was right away.
When I worked at the grocery store the rule was if the person made eye contact or was within ten feet, you greeted them.
