There is a backpack-wearing, always walking fellow who has taken to SB to escape the heat and hang out for SEVERAL hours. He'll buy some minor item so no one can say he's loitering. This was all cool and groovy, but now he's taken to turning his table into a home away from home. He'll sit there for hours, playing some kinda D @ D game, writing all sorts of shit down meticulously OR he'll break out his sewing kit and sit there, patching his clothes.

He comes every day and I don't think that's right. EVERY day, sometimes ALL day. His table is completely covered with all this crap he pulls out of his backpack - like he's moving in. I ask AP about this and all they can say is "this is a tricky position for Target."

I say the guy is loitering and making the SB look like a homeless shelter. What happens when he brings a friend to commandeer another table???

This happens a lot at my store and the response is similar. AP just hovers in the vicinity.

IIRC, Mcdonalds has a 2 hour limit then you're OUT.

Ive seen this at a couple of restaurants near me. People, probably homeless or board hang out all day everyday

Not my store or company do I don't care

Goddamn...

I wonder how this differs from say - an Applebees? Can people loiter there forever, like at Target? Why/How is it different?

Not that I know of, but I'm just an observer.

It is Starbucks brand and people may think it is as accommodating as an independent Starbucks. Even before that recent incident Starbucks would allow people to get a drink and then stay there for several hours.

You could always bring it up to the etl that guests are expressing concern about how much stuff is growing from the person. If you make it sound like a guest brining it up the etls should in theory have to address it. Asants though

If the ETLs don't care, then who am I to worry about it.

I was just wondering what ya'lls take was on this.

Starbucks is the third place and WANTS people sitting in the store, even if they're not buying anything and Target doesn't care what the guests are doing as long as they aren't causing problems/aren't stealing. There's nothing AP can do because he's not technically doing anything wrong.

That kinda sounds like an opinion, not a SB mission statement.

I don't care what anyone says - homeless loiterers make the store look trashy.

Dang @Kartman , I didn’t take you for someone that’s heartless. I mean you might look like a “homeless” when pushing a single cart with like trash in it.
Maybe this guy is a UC cop, on a steak out. Don’t judge a book by a cover. Or a homeless by his cart, he/she just might be gainfully employed as a CA at your local retailer.

Heck, perhaps he's the Messiah? Come to save us???

My last store had a guy pretty much held up in FA all day for a week. AP and one of the ETLs eventually talked to the guy and apparently asked him what his situation was and offered him a cab ride to a shelter.

As AP, I can agree with what your AP says. Last thing Target would want is a viral video of security escorting a homeless person out of the store after they bought something.

Now with that said, we have done it on occasion when they were asking guests for money, talking to themselves, getting a water cup and filling it with soda or slushie,or getting too many complaints on them. But in this situation, unless he’s stinking up the building, I’d let him be. Homeless or not, he’s currently a paying guest and it’s against AP policy to profile.

THis guy sits there and talks to himself, for sure. I watch guests looking at him like WTF?

You should see him sewing weird patches of cloth together. I can't figure out what he's making.
