I have wondered if Target is headed for the same fate that Kmart has gone through. They didn't survive in Canada and plenty of their U.S. stores have closed recently. There are also people boycotting the stores due to the restroom issue which is giving Target problems.

I think the boycott's impact varied from region to region and according to store's guest demographics. We had a noticeable ding in sales.

I feel like K Mart is more like Sears or Fred Meyers. A store that tries to be everything without doing any one thing well. Target has a niche as does Wal Mart.

Kmart is a company barely surviving, Target is still a massively profitable company. When Target cuts payroll it is not that they can not afford it, they simply want to pop the profit as much as possible. Retail over all is a very challenging environment for everybody now, online shopping is a huge challenge to brick and motor stores. And it does not help Target keeps shooting itself in the foot with things like Canada and Pfresh which never worked out the way the thought. Targets numbers fall in line with other retailers, when they are up so is Target, when they are down so is Target. That has more to do with how people are spending their money than anything Target does. The "boycott" irrelevant as Target sales have been up over all just not up as high they wanted. That is something else to keep in mind, same store sales are still growing, just not fast enough for investors.

This is accurate. Right now retail sales are down nationwide, though target is doing bether than most of its competitors.

Kmart built too quickly and basically imploded from within. Instead of putting money into improving existing stores they simply opened more stores. Greed for profits is what got them where they are now.

A similar thing can be said about Target with the Canada expansion. Too much too quick. Target can only cut so much to improve profits before it has a negative effect and turns people away. It's a very fine line between increasing profits and causing money to be lost. Target along with other retailers are skirting that line right now.

They also bought and then sold Borders when they realized they had no idea how to run a chain of bookstores.
That was at a loss to them so it couldn't have helped.

It was that but mostly the greed part. Kmart had a CEO who stole a shitload from the company (Chuck Conaway). Also, the new CEO, Eddie Lampbert is also a crook. He's took over the company and is just leasing the locations out to other businesses to profit his holdings company.

Target isn't going anywhere. As others have stated in other threads, a yellow work center or process is as profitable as a green one for the most part. Corporate has figured that out and has adjusted payroll downward to reflect that position. Most shoppers aren't going to stop shopping at Target because the shelves are a bit messy or a little bit bare. People won't stop shopping at Target because the floor has no staff available to help or the lines are a bit long, Walmart has already proven this. As long as Target can get the merchandise and pricing right, and give the illusion of being nicer than WM, it will survive for the time being.

Borders was by no means their only large scale chain venture. during the 80s and into the 90s Kmart bought into the diversify philosophy and traded companies nearly left and right.

Yeah I remember Kmart selling insurance and real estate in my area in the 80s and 90s.
