they can, but typically young hispanic males are, and females are not (sent to ie lanes/art/depal). that's just 100% the truth. so, it's surprising you were sent tbh. yes i know there are def women in ob/ib that work those areas. i mean as far as flexes, and its not 100% the case but its like 95%.
since hq took over hiring you see way more women in ob (due to local HR used to profile blatantly, thats the whole deal why HQ had to take over hiring), but they are still a tiny minority there (because altho the hiring ratio may be more like 50-50, much fewer of the women last in OB). which used to almost never happen, ditto male packers. used to barely exist, now like half of packers are male. gotta avoid those lawsuits.
most likely they will not send you back nor will they force you to be trained. some get that privilege of being able to basically turn down a flex dept. i certainly never did get that privilege...must be nice lol.
sounds also like you were sent to non con sort, which is easy basically. if you want a real bad example some are forced to do lanes etc;. and why some are and some arent is never explained, and you will just get endless lies after lies if you ask the reasons. target really deserves multiple lawsuits over their bs. i'm a republican, but this is why i'd support a union at target. because management abides by no rules with flexing, no matter how many lies they tell.
also a lot of females in my dept get out by saying they arent trained. so again target are completely full of crap about it, cus nobody is trained on their first day obviously. but some ppl are forced to stay down there and some get sent back for "I'm not trained", with no fairness whatsoever.
most likely if they ever try to send you again if you raise enough stink and complain enough about not being trained they'll stop. however it not being your key is the reason why it happened at all. they have no favoritism towards ppl not on the key.
