Archived Walmart raising starting pay to $10.

The wal-marts in my area have consistently paid more for new hires than target for the last 15 years. This isn't new news for us.

Our Walmarts are clean, well lit, well staffed, and better priced than Target (even with the discount). Target is understaffed and never remodeled or updated, but still charges more.

I predict Target goes the way of Circuit City, Media Play, Kmart, and Radio Shack. Any time you punish stores for missing sales, you pave your path to demise.

I shopped at Sams and Walmart more than Target when I worked at Target and got a discount—now that I'm done Target goes back to being a place I just shop sales and clearance.
 
I live across the street from Wal-Mart... I wouldn't make more, but maybe it wouldn't be as bad.

That whole Walmart people thing seems to either depend on region.. Or be greatly exaggerated. I shop at Walmart all the time and have never witnessed anything worthy of going up on the people of Walmart website.

They start the same here, but they've been known for giving better raises and they give them faster.

I haven't seen anything like it in person, but last time I went to a Walmart, there was some sort of domestic dispute in the parking lot and I was like "oh hell no."

People of Walmart are everywhere, but in some places, they're just not as common.
 
Reading all this negativity is really irritating me.... Target is a great company, yes we have made some mistakes in the past few years, but we are not doomed. I think it is funny that people think Walmart has an endless amount of jobs, they don't. It is very unrealistic to think you can just walk into Walmart and get a job. Also, just because there pay might change, there is no guarantee that anything else will. I mean, I make $8.60 an hour and I have been working for Target for over 6 years. I mean, its not much, but then again, I am single and really good at saving money. I have had my highs and lows. But, in the end I love the people I work with, and I love the guests. To me, money is not the biggest factor. If I wanted to make more money, I would do porn or prostitute myself before I would choose to work for Walmart. I think you also have to think about why they are increasing pay, I think they felt pressured by the media and the endless protests. I don't think there are many people who really believe that they are doing this for there employees benefit. I could go on and on, but I am not.

Well, I have never done it, but if you go on craigslist, depending on your location, you would be surprised. Obviously its not legal to advertise for prostitution, but a lot of horny people use craigslist, and if they want something bad enough, I am sure they would be willing to pay for it.

I've actually read a couple of articles on this on an escort bulletin board. The only real market is for gay men. One bi male mentioned that he gets about 1 female client every couple of years and that tends to be more of an "arm candy for social function" than anything else. Otherwise, 99.999% of his clients were male.

Women that are only looking for some D are just going to hit up a bar or Tinder. They don't need to pay for it when there's always a ton of dudes around that will bang anything.

Time will tell. If I wanted to bet I would be against you. Sure the company is salvageable, but as long as it continues going in this direction it will fail.

Wow. If I had to choose between target and walmart now I'd pick walmart. Part of it is I want to see how working there compares to target, and partly because the pay at Walmart is actually better than target. Now it will start at $10 per hour next February, and guaranteed raises of $.40 or more every year, plus if your store does well in sales the associates actually get a bonus. Note that those things are simply things I've heard elsewhere so take them with a grain of salt, but I do mean I'd rather work at Walmart than target if I had to pick between them (and nowhere else).

Well obviously, if target was under half the pressure walmart is they may have already caved. It's popular to hate on walmart even though target has pretty much stooped to their level at this point. Target doesn't get nearly as much bad press as walmart does. Only gawker and @TSs seem to go after them for wages and other issues like unionization and the walk of shame.

I dated a girl that worked for Wal-Mart as a TM around 30 hours a week and she got a quarterly bonus when her store hit the right numbers. It was only around $100 or so but it's still much better than the big fat $0 we get.
 
I can honestly say I got lucky at my store. When I was hired the STL told me she understood how hard my situation was so she gave me an extra dollar due to my experience in retail and because she was just very kind about the predicament I was in. I can only hope one day more managers take their employees into consideration and treat them like actual human beings and not just a warm body who is replaceable. I say good for Wal-Mart. When I worked there starting pay was $7.15 an hr.

It means they'll slowly start closing locations till eventually they're just a shell of their former selves. A joke of a company that no one takes seriously who has to close stores every year in order to stay afloat. Don't get me wrong, it's not a next year kind of thing but they need to turn things around.

Target's not infallible, they can't keep racking up these losses and stagnant growth year after year. Target still hasn't reached the high point that Kmart hit back in the 80s. At one point Kmart had well over 2,200 stores, which is almost 30% more locations than Target has now. They owned Builder's Square, Waldenbooks/Borders, and The Sports Authority. They were an absolute behemoth of a company and now they're nothing more than a punchline. Target still hasn't even reached Kmart's peak of the 1980s.

This, pre-much. I mean, it's great Walmart is going to be having a base pay of $10 buuuuuuuuuut as with everything, you have to look at the hours people are getting.

So, Walmart is doing $9 minimum by April, and $10 minimum by February of next year.

States having equal or higher minimum wages than that are:
  • California by January 1, 2016 - $10 (Higher in Oakland, Richmond, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose)
  • District of Columbia by 2016 - $11.50
  • Iowa by 2016 - $10.10
  • Massachusetts by 2016 - $10.10
  • Seattle, Washington by April 2015 - $10.00
 
Target's position will be safe for a while, though much can be said about the notion of brick and mortar stores. I suspect that sector will be around for a while longer but online shopping is still creeping up.

As far Target specifically, they definitely tipped into the K-mart turf when they tried to do cheaper crap to directly compete with Wal-Mart during the nadir of the recession. That was ugly, because even if we were cheaper the company just could not overcome the image that Wal-mart was still cheaper. I've noticed that we're starting to go back to better designed, more fashionable (as well as pricier) products. We may tip back into that weird little line Target walks between discount retailer and department store.
 
I didn't quote the post because lazy, but I imagine the gay (or gay for pay) male prostitutes have a better chance at a living wage.

Of course there are positive things about target. If there weren't, a lot of us wouldn't be here... On a forum, talking about how things could be better. Honestly, I'd take my $8.72 with no complaints if my schedule was more consistent (this is the the thing Wally impressed me with, personally). I don't even care if my leaders continued to be insensitive douche bags if I had the same days off every week or maybe some sort of rotation where I have every other weekend off. I just... I want a work life balance. I'd love to be able to move out of my mom's place, but if they gave me the opportunity to have a life, I might not care about not getting paid enough to do that.

I see a list of locations where this doesn't matter, but it's such a small group of states that this will still impact Wally employees all over the country. My state's only been above 7.25 for a year, so I'm happy for all the people in Walmart who are making not 10 who will be.
 
I think everyone at my store is well above the number. I also think that the Walmarts in our town are also above this number.
 
Orrrrrr, they have other sources of income...

Like I said before, I make $8.60/hr.... which I live fine off of. I mean, I have no kids, and I also have roommates, so that helps. But, I also am very smart with my money. I live a lifestyle that SHOULD be lived with someone that makes what I make. I don't mean to offend some people, but if you barely can make ends meet, maybe you shouldn't have gotten that new Ipod or that new car. I am not saying that you and I don't deserve nice things, I just don't really think you and I really need them, and I know that if I do want them, I will have to get a job outside of retail, so that I can afford those things without having to live paycheck to paycheck, because I have no desire to move up from where I am now, too much stress, not worth the pay increase.
