Target (TGT) has tapped its largest market, California, to test several potential changes to the look of its future stores.

In a pilot program called "LA25," the discounter has taken its 35 top store enhancements that it has been testing across the country and put them all together in 25 stores in Los Angeles. Some of the enhancements include sleeker apparel fixtures, a better-lit fresh produce section that emphasizes organics, dedicated service stations for people to quickly pick up online orders, as well as the addition of specialists in key departments to help provide product knowledge.

There are "service advisers," too, that assist in navigating the chain's website and mobile app Cartwheel.

Also, Target continued with the overhaul of its restaurant options to make them more interesting for shoppers. For instance, it expanded the floor space devoted to Starbucks (SBUX) and added the coffee king to the five or so stores that didn't have the concept before. It is also testing "healthy" fast-casual concepts such as salad bowl seller Freshii and sandwich maker Which Wich, which comes on the heels of the company announcing the launch of a Chobani yogurt cafe inside a new store set to open in New York City in October.

The new grocery section uses LED lighting to better highlight fresh produce and organic offerings.

"What we are doing with LA25 will influence our next-generation store experience that we are working on -- there may also be specific sections from these stores that may help influence the chain quicker," said Mark Schindele, a senior vice president at Target who's leading LA25, in an interview with TheStreet. Target plans to spend $1 billion this year to spruce up the shopping experience of its stores, with a portion of that being devoted to remodels.

The company will undertake 39 full store remodels in 2016, and open 15 more stores.

The only thing not in the test stores? The inventory-checking robot that made headlines recently for wandering up and down aisles at a Target store in San Francisco.

California is Target's largest market with more than 260 stores. A Target spokeswoman explained to TheStreet in March the 25 stores were chosen due to their density as well as their mix, with several stores being in Target's smaller format model.

LA25 follows several upgrades Target made to its stores last year to drive sales.

Bye-bye boring customer service section, hello a place to grab a snack and an online order.

The company added people in the beauty department to provide information on products. It outfitted the apparel department with mannequins. And in perhaps the biggest move, Target inked a deal to open CVS (CVS) pharmacies inside of its stores. These are currently opening across the country.

Target's efforts appear to be paying off in the form of stronger sales compared to others in retail.

Same-store sales rose 1.2% in the first quarter, falling short of the expectations of execs due to sluggish U.S. consumer spending, but much better than the declines by Macy's (M) , Kohl's (KSS) and J.C. Penney's(JCP) . Target's store traffic has increased for six straight quarters, running counter to the broader trend in retail.

Despite the benefits from store enhancements, Target took a cautious stance on its outlook for the second-quarter following a post-Easter spending slowdown.

Second-quarter sales may drop as much as 2% from the prior year. Earnings should be $1 to $1.20 a share, compared with Wall Street estimates of $1.19.

Apparel displays have been modernized, and resemble ones found at department stores.

"The stock's historically high relative discount to the S&P 500 now appears justified, and we fear management is struggling to simultaneously define its vision and manage shareholder expectations," said Jim Cramer and Jack Mohr of Action Alerts PLUS in a note after the earnings release.

Who thinks displaying merchandise below knee level is a good selling tactic?

I'm not a fan of the new displays in Entertainment because to even see most of the product you have to back away from the display just to be able to see it. And I don't think it will be any better if they shove merchandise below knee level in those little cubby holes in soft lines.

I like the guest service station. The snacks are just a simple way to drive sales for store pick up. As long as they keep it simple.
Performance, meh. I do like the fact that they are finally realizing that the way we used to shop is just gone. Now if they can get that idea through their heads concerning black friday shopping.

Here is another change happening with Tm's with LA25.
From another thread:
Our Store is one of the ones with EE Remodel partaking in LA25. We pretty much run electronics now and are supposed to have our own set of keys, I'd have a talk with the AP ETL. A nice change is we also get commission of off everything we ring up in electronics. So if your store is one with these changes let your Mobile rep ring up guests. They want us to ring up all guests, push for surveys and red cards as well. Since Target is giving us commission on ELectronics now we are expected to perform better than Red Shirt TMs did.

Most important will they actually staff this crap unlike everything else? Where they just leave it to rot.. And they wonder why their steritech visits are red every time? No can clean if no one is scheduled..

Sorry having a rant since today has been complete shit.

These stores are staffed to the max. And they've been doing this since early last year.

You what really bothers me about the "after" picture of Guest Service? They couldn't take 2 seconds to straighten the price screens.

Anyway.... IT'S ALL BEAUTIFUL! YES! MORE LEDS LIGHTS! I love it! I was just thinking the other day that my store looks so dull and drab. I know our colors are red an khaki...but our store literally has a khaki overcast to it. It's depressing. Despite being pretty up to date, my store still just looks old and tired.

I especially think this about our mannequins. Sure, they're there. But they have no special lighting, and barely draw any attention. A few LEDs would really brighten everything up.

Back to guest service....I'm concerned by how small that area looks. And I don't look forward to what it would be like having to stock that candy, on top of my already long "To-Do" list. I also think it's an eye sore, it reminds me of CVS or a 7-11. But otherwise, I love it.

We have the c9 reinvention, but nothing in that bottom table except folded bras...

..the big hannaford grocery near me just remodeled to similar pallet/ produce field case looking fixtures...wondering if this is a trend?

Gs looks annoying, like the counter at.....cvs. coincidence?

I'll take the leds though. Heard some stores are getting solar panels....I like it.

I'm in the area and loving the remodel. There's some additional areas that received makeovers- Starbucks, the check lanes, signs. Everything looks so much more fresh, clean, and modern. I don't feel like the candy in guest service is selling as well as they expected though.

I like the look of guest service. Really, though, our registers just look so dated... even more so in this updated environment. Imagine low profile, touch-screen POS at that guest service. I don't think grab and go snacks are really the best option for merchandise there though. I think things like reusable bags and water bottles would look much better.

I have to agree with everyone on how cheesy Guest Service looks. Really? Dibs to go with my order pickup? Do I go into the cash office to see my complementary movie too?

I think this is what you get when you have execs with too much time on their hands. Instead of raises for employees or God forbid actually staffing the place, let's put a candy counter at the service desk. I hope Brian gave himself a nice pat on the back for that one.
