I'm Lost! The REDCard Thread

I don't have one because a GSTL at my store was constantly hassling me to sign up. I was going to sign up for one, but now I won't just out of spite.
hahahahaha So you'll bypass your TM discount and pay more than you need to in order to spite a GSTL? All right, then.

What does a red card have to do with using my TM discount, besides online purchases, which I rarely do anyway?
Unless you're paying with cash, check, or Target giftcards, you need a red card to get your TM discount. If you are buying gift cards with your debit card for the purpose of using your TM discount you could get in trouble if they find out about it. If you want to spite your GSTL sign up for a red card at a different Target.

"Hey GSTL, you constantly asking me about getting a RedCard really got me thinking about it. So the other day while I was shopping at [other target] I finally went ahead and signed up for one!"

I don't understand why people would want to spend money (credit card) they don't have. I love my debit card.

I myself, don't understand why anyone would want a debit card. Besides, to use at ATM's.

Every time, you swipe your debit card.. your making a instant withdrawal from your checking account & available balance. That money is not available for two to five days, while it's pending. So... if a mistake happens and your double charged, your out of luck until that pending charge drops off.

With a Credit Card.. that money would just be unavailable as part of your credit line. You wouldn't... have to worry about the possibility of over-drafting your account, or.. anything.

That.. and if a problem goes wrong, you can dispute the transaction with your credit card company. And you won't be required to pay for it until the dispute is over. *Do keep in mind, when you file a dispute, almost always the card company will side with you.*

Than.... There's the fun little fact, that Fraud is so rampant. What happens, when someone grabs your Debit Card Information, and goes on a shopping spree?

More than likely, you'll end up like my fiancee and be without your money for a week or two, while the bank investigates the fraud.

But in the mean time... you have NO Money. You might get lucky and the account might not be over drafted, but the balance will probably be close to zero, or negative. And with no money in your account, every single check you've written or bill payment you've made, will bounce.

Your Car Payment, Utilities, Student Loans, Rent, Cable, Phone, everything will bounce. And... all of them, will probably impose late fees, or returned item fees on the accounts. And some may report very negative information to your credit report, if not paid within days.

You can very easily be screwed over in all of this. And I mean, very easily. Between the amount of time spent contacting everyone, and fighting with companies, and the fees. You'll probably end up spending close to $200 at-least in fees.

Or... you can just be smart with your money. And shop everywhere with a Credit Card, and Pay it in full every single month. You won't have to worry about fraud, as it will come out of the banks money, and while they investigate, you won't be without yours.

It's definitely something you should think about.

To each their own. I have several accounts and the one I use for my DC has only a minimal amount of funds. My other accounts have the bulk of my money. If someone (knock on wood) hacks my shit, it won't be the end of the world.

Your bank sounds awful if all that stuff goes on. My bank thought I had a fraudulent charge the other day (I messed up a vacation hour request and I'm broke and they know I never let the account get that low lol) and they called, texted and emailed within minutes. Even if somehow they were less vigilant and something went on for a long time, I wouldn't have "no money." Emergencies like that are a good time to pull out the cc. And none of those things you listed report to credit bureaus. The ones I use don't I guess unless you stop paying for so long that they send you to collections. But if anyone's ever in a pinch with bills, call asap. Seriously, if you have a history of on time payments and something comes up, most companies will help you out. When I was unemployed I had to make several of those calls. Sallie Mae was the only company with no compassion.

All of the charges, came through, I wanna say, in less than 5 minutes in total. In the end... he had a negative $300 balance. There was literally no time, for him to respond to a fraud alert. The account was already overdrawn.

Both his student loan company & someone else reported the late payment on his credit report.

I really just wrote that, to explain what can happen though. It took him a lot of time, to clean up the mess... when it really could have been easily prevented. Some companies will wave the fees, but, some aren't so nice.

Obviously to each his own. I really just don't want to see anyone go through what he did.

Because they don't. Lord help us all if upper management starts requiring us to ask why.

I've worked for Target for over ten years. I literally only signed up for both, credit and debit, a month ago.

Why didn't I have one or two? Because I don't want one. Because I don't like debit cards in general. And I have a credit card that pays me cash back. The red card doesn't save me enough to offset that.

Are there many cash back cards if any that pay 5% back?

I have a credit card. I only use it if I remember to. Usually I go for debit. I only have it to build a credit score since I pay the entire thing in full each month.

Discover card does 1% back plus 5% back in rotating bonus categories every quarter. I think 5% back at retail stores usually occurs in Q4.

Plenty of CC companies offer points that can be traded for cash back, but I'm not sure which specific ones come out to more than 5% back.

I missed the student loan mention... Or forgot about it when I typed my response. My bad. If he's been good at paying the loans otherwise, they might've removed it for him. Idk if they can/will do it after the fact, but capital one and discover both didn't report me when I asked nicely.

But when those fraudulent charges all came out, I would've called the people I have to pay monthly right away. And I turned off overdraft protection so my account never goes negative anymore. My card just gets rejected. Turned text alerts on as well so if I have less than $xx I get a text. I see how if you're worried about fraud and don't trust your bank's security and alert features, cc would be a better option. I just trust me more with my bank though.

I'm obsessed with USAA, though. If I were gonna switch to using credit for everyday life, it'd only be if I got a USAA card.

I know I wouldn't qualify for the credit so I got the debit card. I like that the debit lets me save 5 % off phones cards. So they basically pay the tax for me which is awesome. I'm definitely not a fan of the charges not showing up in my bank for a couple of days tho.

I've always been a target shopper, even before I worked there. So I figured why the hell not. 15 % sounds good to me!

If you use discover deals when you make certain online purchases you can get more than 5% for a lot of stuff. I just skimmed through and saw a bunch of stores that are over 5% and that's on top of the normal 1%. During 4th q they had 5% for online shopping so I used discover deals when online shopping and racked up. Was nice.

I love my Discover Card.

I am on disability and I cant get ccs. I do have thr debit/EFT card, and now my entire bsnk statement is 90% Target. One time I used it to buy a coffee drink. It is very handy to have at work. dont like advising people on their financial decisions , and there legitimately are people who ant use ccs resposibly, so why put them in that tempting position? I ran up 33k in cc debt in one year. I had to go to Consumer Credit Counseling. They took over my paychecks and it took me years to pay it off.
I learned my lesson, but it is is a hell of a thing to just hand out to people higgeldy piigeldy. I despise credit cards and payday loans. Crooked ss a dogs hind leg and both take advantage of poor people who are desperate.

I understand. I watch how much I spend every month on credit card, & pay them off by end of then month.

If you've got there " IT " card, call in. They have a double cash back promotion for the next 12 months. That means, you can get 10% back on those categories, and 2% back on everything else. ;)

Something tells me.. I'll rack up a ton of rewards during Christmas this year. :)

I've had two times when people have tried to access my account and both times the bank nailed them down pretty quick.
I did have to call Apple and let them know that my card had been used to buy a bunch of their ITunes cards but they handled it really quick and I didn't lose a dime.
