Let's say in some crazy dream world, you got to revamp a department. Move gondolas, choose new fixtures, signing, etc. What department would you choose and what would you do with it?

And the original discussion to spawn this:

Ohh, I really like this idea. You could even make the displays really fancy and have a platform at shin or waist height--that'd keep everything off the floor and tied down but still easily seen and accessible so the guests could touchy-touchy to their heart's content. I'd put a call box on either side of the display area--front and back. I hate those things but they do make it easy to summon tm's.

The gondola for tv displays would work fine and then I'd reserve the other side to not be tied to any POGs and use it as flex, clearance and extra seasonal. Just because it seems like there's always extra stuff floating around and without dedicated clearance/flex zones it's untidy and it drives me crazy. Just put it in one area (with signs explaining that if it does not have a clearance sticker that matches the item number it's not on clearance). Give it two weeks and it'll sell itself because guests will know where to find it all. Domestics is usually near the center of the store so it's a good place for it--far enough from the door they'll walk past a lot of the impulse buy-stuff and close enough they'll pop in "just to see what's there". And dedicating a whole aisle to it means we can easily put the big things out without taking up real-item space inline. And then right around the corner will be this super pretty display area and it's "Oh, weren't we talking about a new dresser? We can just look." POG resets of that area would turn into a breeze--just swap out the display model and those signs.

And then, the most important step: staff the goddamned area. With a handful tm's who know how to properly pull and backstock. They can clean the coffee cups off the display, get to know the products and fuss over the guests. And, of course, help other areas as needed but there's usually enough to do in those sections they could stay busy most of the day without an issue.
I picture the same thing. Expand this idea even further though, not just furniture. You could remove a majority of the gondolas throughout your "home" sections, and leave gondolas standing for your backwalls and one aligned with your breezeways to create natural dividers. Along these tall gondolas can be your "general accessories" such as the most popular lamps, tv stands, toss pillows etc... Inside each "area" would be your departments such as furniture, bedding, bath, domestics, kitchen... These areas can be mixtures of what global bazaar looked like and the Electronics Experience fixtures (the 8' long tables, but wood on top instead of black) where displays of towels, bedding, shower curtains, etc are all displayed on top, and product is aligned underneath. If a guest cannot load the item into their cart themselves, there is not a good reason to keep the product on the floor both as the display and the box stock. Along all these items as well, the signage should read something like, "Call a TM to retrieve these items here OR Use your Target App to Scan here and Ship directly to your house!"

I also agree on the staffing piece though, do not get me wrong! I do not want to just slice payroll, I want to stop wasting payroll on things that are not productive. By reducing the unnecessary replenishment of items that can ship straight to guests, we reduce the need to stock as much on our shelves, reduce the clearance, while still driving sales for Target itself.

Sporting Goods... just because it never gets any love in my store. Or either Entertainment.

How so though like what would you do

This. But only after all items are given actual locations. No more of this softlines-esque flexing nonsense.
I've worked in softlines enough that this doesn't really bother me. I always zone it like the rest of softlines is zoned: kids together but separated by gender, infants and toddlers together, then women's and men's separate from the rest. I got through half of Fan Central the other night and it looked AWESOME.

PFresh, get rid of those 2 bakery tables, they are half empty anyway. I would put in 2 stand alone coolers, set the temp for dairy and be able to flex in what I want, extra stuff from backroom that I want to get rid of. Usse 1 for just TPc's and the other maybe keep neat and use for seasonal stuff.

Through my years I have watched the sporting goods department shrink and shrink. With every remodel the department gets smaller. Dick Sporting goods seems to be alive and well and their prices are in my opinion crazy high. I am not sure if Target is dropping the ball on a field or if people just do not think of Target as a place for their sporting goods needs. I am guessing the demand just was not there. When I first started we had an entire golf aisle, we spent an entire aisle on basketball hoops, football equipment, roller skates, hockey, etc. Now each of those sports is lucky to get more than 4 or 8 feet of space each.

The front end, I'd put guest services closest to the door from right to left: pharmacy, photo w/ portrait studio, bathroom indent, open concept cafe kind of a giant hall perse, with central self-serve target cafe kiosk, and starbucks with a coffee bar off to the side, and then the other set of doors to come in and out. Then there would be a nice 20 ft walk way space between all of the above and the double stacked lanes, that would line the front, with 4 SCO's on both ends. Also for the lanes, there would be the be a red square with an LED lit number, and when the lane is open the target bulleye will light up on the lane, when closed a red light will emit with the word: CLOSED on it. For the registers they would be touch screen and the back of the screen would be facing the guest (like in Target Canada) there would be a belt of course, then the double scanner and the computer would go right above that. And then for the bagging area, it would be the same for the most part, but there would also be one of those grocery store type of baggage chute things they have to put bags because the area to put bags at my store right now, is WAY too small. And also for the front, there would be a central wall with a giant LED lit screen with a loop of different stuff, from apples falling into a basket, to how to work cartwheel etc...I could go on for days of my dream target, and that's just it, it's a dream and it would NEVER happen.

I wish all Targets could have a separate clearance area. I would love to have all the sale stuff in one spot. One giant messy area as opposed to all areas looking like a hot mess.
I think they like to blend it in so people are exposed to more of the store. Higher likelihood of buying non clearance that way.

I like that idea. I hate when a guest comes from a different store looking for a clearance item and the item no longer has a location. So it could be anywhere in the store.

yes, put my clearance freezer stuff on the dry shelf, at least it's out of the backroom freezer, and off the metro, or 3 tier cart.

Dedicated clearance endcaps would be nice

Does anyone else's Sporting Goods always look like crap? Half the time the swimwear is flexed to hell and there's never a proper place for it anymore. It's easily always the worst area in the store.

And thats why i want a permanent clearance endcap instead of moving

It's not like clearance is hard to find as it is with the endcaps moving. Just scan for the clearance header(s) on the back endcaps and you're good to go, or go check out seasonal after it goes PTM.

Even just a few years back, most departments had at least one or two store option endcaps that didn't have salesplanners. You could use them for clearance if needed or you built endcaps of merch that you had in the back. You could be a little creative with them which was sort of fun. Also, endcaps used to only be mapped out on the adjacency if they were permanent endcaps. You just put your higher priority salesplans on the front and lower ones on the back. You just aimed to keep items on an endcap near their home location, preferably the endcap for it's home aisle. You might have enough salesplanners for every endcap or you might end up with less than enough and you found stuff to go there (usually sale items). Now every single endcap is mapped out on the adjacency and corp tends to move any reties to other locations on the adjacency every time a new round of salesplanners drops. Things the company is doing just don't make sense.

I can't stand the cardboard display cases in the children's section that they put the Hanes underwear at back to school time or the barbie display at Christmas. The 90's cash registers that look like the 80's computers could use a nice upgrade too. One spot could definitely get a design makeover.
