I'm Lost! The REDCard Thread

1. You should have applications in your drawer with barcodes on the front page. Scan the front barcode while logged in, or even while in the middle of ringing.

2. A screen should come up asking for Credit Card or Check Card. Pick One.

3. If you picked Debit Card, it will now ask for a blank check. Insert a check as if you were using one for payment.

4. Afterwards, or if you picked Credit, it will go back to the ringing screen and "Terms and Conditions" will appear as a line on your transaction. The guest will now have prompts on the Card Reader for him/her to fill out. Inform the guest to complete the card reader, and you can continue scanning items/bagging during this time.

5. At the end of the transaction, hit TOTAL. POS will now ask for an ID of the guest. Either scan/swipe the guest's drivers license, and enter all information POS requests (usually address,etc.). Make sure to ask the guest if their address on their license is correct.

Thats it. Now its up for POS to either approve/deny the application.

If the application is denied, a receipt will print out saying "Needs further review". Applications are not denied on the spot usually, so the guest will get something in the mail in about a week.

If a RED screen pops up saying REDCARD Problem, give guest $3 coupon; the application went through but was unable to be immediately processed. The guest should wait for mail for about a week in this case.

Otherwise, if approved, your screen will say Approved!, and the temporary card will print out on receipt paper. They can use this until they get their card in the mail in a bit over a week. Afterwards, the transaction will attempt to charge itself to the new REDCard account and save the guest 5% off.

So lately at my store it has been a little slow with converison. However our ETL and STL do not understand why it has been so hard for the cashiers to succeed in redcards. Our cashiers are constantly asking and we are being told asking isn't enough. We have even worked with the cashiers to have different methods to get redcards. But still isn't the cashiers, no one wants one. Now they are coaching and doing write ups on our cashiers. Is this legit becasue I thought it isnt?

Redcard Technique - A Tiered Approach

So my last Redcard thread got closed due to no fault of my own, but I have been thinking about a tiered approach to asking about Redcards.

Do you have a Redcard?

No Thanks

You could save 5 percent every time.

No no thank you.

There is also a debit option.

No no no thank you.

When do you stop asking? There was a cashier at my old store who got 6-10 every full shift and she would push push push until the guest was most upset and refused. She even told me this.

I am going to be meeting with other front end people ETL-GE GSTL's fellow GSAs about Redcards soon and I want to know what is a reasonable technique to recommend for cashiers.

Obviously the most common "Would you like to sign up for a Redcard today" NO route is not sufficient. But is pushing to the point of tears necessary? That cashier at my old store actually whipped an old lady up into such a state that she was bawling and had to be escorted out by GSTL's who reassured her that she need not get a Redcard.

Yeeeaaahhh...

This is obviously a hot topic, and I don't know if I have a lot more to add, other than that for right now, it seems that leaders don't really care about the "why"s ( which they nearly invariably classify as "excuses" ), and instead focus on the "how"s ( i.e., how indeed do you plan to increase your conversions, regardless of whatever redundant or impractical or ineffectual their recommendations are to that effect... )

Try to be persistent but not annoying. ( Yeah, I know...) Try to change your approach up here and there and not sound too robotic or confusing.

All else fails, you could always find some willing friends or loved ones who have a checking acct. or good credit to sign up while you're there-after all, they don't HAVE TO ACTUALLY USE IT, and FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY, IF YOU DO DO THIS APPROACH...

DO. NOT. ACTUALLY. RING. THEM. UP. FOR. ANYTHING.

AT ALL.

ESPECIALLY if they are a dependent on your discount card!!!

Open-ended questoins that can lead to some sort of actual engaging conversation can sometimes work better...

No need to get people in such a state that they feel they need to pop a Valium just to face down the cashier at Target...

( That said, some people can wind up in such a state just thinking about leaving the house, and while I empathise and sympathise with them, there's not a lot we can do for them other than to gently direct them to the pharmacy... )

I rarely ever get them, but I try to work in that I have the debit card, that it comes with the same perks as the cc, and the donations to schools. I can get people interested in the debit card, but who in 2013 is carrying a checkbook!?

The other day a guest joked with me about how her Red cc is maxed, so that's when I brought up the debit card... of course she didn't have a checkbook, but she was interested.

When I worked at Macy's, they had a cheat sheet so you could tell guests approx how much they'd save on their current purchase. Calculating 5% is easy on the spot though, maybe doing that and telling them it'd add up if they shop Target often.

We have cashiers like that at my store too.. every time they come in they get 2-6 redcards in those shifts that are less than 5 hours. Their secret trick is persistence and selling the debit card. The best way i get them is when a guest has a shopping cart full of stuff and there's no long lines. I'll start by asking if they even own one and then selling the debit.

Oh I have researched different ways for the cashiers and myself to approach guest. I guess all I can do is hope one of them works. Ive tried asking my friends and loved ones and not even they want one! Well now its not only the cashiers I have to worry about, my ETL is actually trying to find a way to hold us accountable. So now I am pushing the take home debit apps since guest don't really carry checks anymore. I've educated almost the whole store about these apps and hopefully this will help our scores.

We have been to that desperate point to where we make fools of ourselves for the cashiers. I actually did a cartwheel for cashiers who achieved redcards. We us to have an agenda for each day where we do something crazy for our cashiers. I'm thinking I might have to bring that back. Lol

Our store is giving away $25 gift cards off that end cap in electronics for getting like 1 or 2 in a shift! I made $50 in extra gift cards in a 6 hour shift last weekend!

We do the giftcards sometimes but we are trying stay away from doing so. The cashiers will only expect that everytime when it is something they are already suppose to drive. That's when we try to get creative with the redcards.

And what is wrong with that? Is Target that cash-strapped that the line workers can't get a better kickback from selling Redcards than a coffee or a Bullseye. Maybe I'm from Bizarro-world, but I'm an adult. Stuffed animals and free food don't get me to work and back, put food on my table, etc.

Ok mod person now that this has been incorporated into this thread in lieu of having its own, I have yet to receive a response. This is really important to me, as I know that if I can't learn how to get Redcards, how can I expect the team to as well. Also I know that basically all they seem to care about is conversion in terms of moving up, so if you cannot inspire Redcards directly or through your team as a GSA you are never going up.

You can delete my post again if you like, but I am feeling very much in need of help on this. I need to have a plan.

Greentreen, how would you like to be sold on one? Hammered left and right until you relented so you'd get the cashier to shut up? Or is one "no" enough?

Well the reason I have only gotten one since starting (granted I am not a cashier but still) is because I do not push push push push. I haven't done it because I do not feel comfortable doing it yet. How do I get to that place?

Don't give up, green. Try this, go do some reshop on the Salesfloor. See a hl tm taking patio up to the front end. Offer to take the patio up there from the hl tm. The tm says sure & helps another guest. You talk to the guest of red cards & benefits. They say no,. Hey, it takes about 60 seconds to save 5 % every time, you come to spot. The guest will say, really? You say sure! Ring up the guest & watch them do the red card. Call gstl for carry out help.
Sometimes taking a break from the front end, will help you get red cards too.

To wagslave1138, we are only allowed to requistion so many prizes for our cashiers and have to get a an LOD approval. If the LOD does not approve than it is out of my hands. Some cashiers dont even see the prizes as a big deal at my store though and still don't want to drive converison. I started at this company as a cashier and still drive red cards myself. I don't expect any prizes and never have except for a better converision score.

To hardworker: You are the perfect cog in the system. If a score on a piece of paper is reward enough for redcards, you are driving profits by not costing the company a dime. If labor is to be rewarded in an adult sense, its not with Bullseyes...

When I see a guest writing checks or using their own debit card, I usually ask "have you ever thought about getting a Target debit card instead?" and going from there. I feel like this question makes them stop and think and let me talk more. Plus, I feel like it acknowledges that they're already heard this whole speech before, which connects with them a little.
